2001 Photomicrography Competition

Michael Davidson is the Director of the Optical and Magneto-Optical Imaging Center at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University. Mr. Davidson’s photomicrographs have been published in more than a thousand national and international scientific journals, popular magazines and newspapers. He has also successfully utilized his expertise in launching two microscopy and photomicrography websites. Before becoming a judge, Davidson won two top ten Small World awards, placing 9th in 1987 and 9th in 1990.

James Hayden is the president of Bio-Graphics, a firm that specializes in scientific photography, as well as providing images for forensic, legal, wildlife and environmental documentation. A multiple Small World contest winner, Hayden is a widely recognized photographer and has been widely published, including most recently in the Journal of Biomedical Communications (JBC) with his article “The Ethics of Digital Manipulation in Scientific Images.”

Kenneth Spring is Chief of the Section on Transport Physiology in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. For over 30 years, he has been involved in the development of electronic detectors and illumination systems for light microscopy. He is an author of numerous publications in the fields of physiology and light microscopy.

James Wyant serves as Director of the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona, where he is also a professor of Optical Sciences and Electrical & Computer Engineering. His affiliations include SPIE, and the Optical Society of America. Dr. Wyant is the author of more than 140 publications in the field of optics and lasers.
